Historical Context
Forest vs Malmö and memories of 1979. The both teams have a historical link, also competing in Forest's most recent continental tour in the 1995-96 Uefa Cup, but it is the continental championship from 1979 that links these clubs, with Britain's first £1m player Francis netting the decisive goal of a pretty miserable final to clinch eternal glory for the red half of Nottingham.
"Brian Clough and Peter Taylor, grey-sweatered and anonymous amid all the colour and celebration, stood for a moment on a bench serenely viewing the celebrations," commented the writer. Their achievement was an remarkable feat that it is difficult to imagine happening again – from second tier to European stage in a short period."
One should note to consider Malmö, who became the first, and to date the last Swedish club to make the championship match under manager Houghton.
This match is a far cry from that peak, closer perhaps to the earlier European encounter between Forest and Malmö in the mid-nineties. Forest are full of confidence after thrashing Liverpool at the famous ground on Saturday, while Malmö haven't kicked a competitive ball since 9 November following the completion of Allsvenskan. The smart money is on the Forest tonight.
Additional games on offer in this match tracking. The Scottish side have already been lost to a European rival this season. Rangers are rock bottom of the competition table at the half-way stage of the group stage with exactly zero. They desperately need a victory if they are to have any opportunity for a late surge for a knockout position.
We'll keep you up to date with all the late games and provide the latest scores from the earlier matches, including Villa vs Young Boys and Rotterdam vs Glasgow.
