The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Sees Major Partnership Formed By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The September uprising was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Political Consultations Taking Place

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several major political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
